Do you remember when Mark Greene died on ER and there were all those dramatic promos with the sappy music and the tag line “A hero dies”? Well, NBC where is the love for John Black? He’s Salem royalty! Just because Ken Corday didn’t shell out the big bucks to film John’s death in Hawaii and/or license “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” does not negate the fact that a hero did die.
Let me be the first to say how happy I was that Brady was able to make his father’s deathbed. Oh, wait, he didn’t. I hope someone at least called or texted him. Same with John’s sometime children Eric and Carrie. At least John’s pseudo parents Shawn and Caroline were there, along with his sometime booty call, Kate.
Alas it’s been a tough year for John: shot by EJ, coma patient, robbed of a kidney by Steve, relegated to the backburner reading old love letters. It wasn’t supposed to end this way, John! You can’t die on a bed; you’re supposed to die on a submarine or on a cliff in some third world country. How can Jack cheat death time after time but you’re the unwilling victim of a late model sedan?
In honor of the once and future Forrest Alamain, here are my favorite memories (this will work better if you imagine Danny Boy playing in the background):
- John and Hope in the jungle: “As soon as I get back from the jungle, I’m going to put this ring on Doc’s finger”.
- John (as Roman) seeing Marlena alive on the pier.
- Isabella’s death.
- Subsex with Hope in her “Brainwashed as Gina” phase.
- John in Paris/Marlena in a gilded cage. “I’m not pleading anything! You all are insane!”
- The aborted Elvis themed wedding to Susan and the aftermath.
I feel like I’ve given John Black a more moving tribute than Days actually did. There better be clips tomorrow at the funeral. How awesome would it be if they closed tomorrow with a John Black voice over, gently whispering, “That’s a fact!”

I can’t believe how low key it is either. He’s dragged this show along almost single handedly at times and this is his send off?

They kept him in a coma for months, sold his penthouse, forced him into a book club/letter reading group and then they kill him off before Sweeps! We’re in sad, sad Soap times.
[...] 8, 2008 by brandname John Black lives. Really, was there ever any doubt? Actually, yes, because we saw John die. What am I even talking about? John died in the same hospital where all of Jack’s organs [...]
