How much of a geek am I that I was super excited about today’s Emmy announcement? (Answer: a big one.)
Every year I enjoy looking at the list of pre-nominations and trying to guess who will actually get the nod. Then I wait what seems like months for the actual nominations to come out..on The View no less! I think that shows us just how seriously this award show is taken. All the other big awards have their nomination specials at like 5:30 am Pacific with reporters and agents. We get Elisabeth Hasselbeck.
True confession: I’ve watched The Daytime Emmys since I was a little girl. I don’t want to date myself, but back then, the awards came on in the afternoon, which I found a lot sexier than cartoons. I was always way more pumped up about the Soap Opera Digest awards, though. Those were the best! First of all, you could actually vote for your favorites, they had awesome categories like “Hottest Male Star” and would feature a horribly cheasy montage of Drake Hogestyn set to Michael Bolton’s “Said I loved you, but I lied”. (I’m not exaggerating, I spent twenty minutes on YouTube trying to find it.)
On topic. I’m so glad that Days scored some nominations, although I find them a little suspect. Darin Brooks? Am I alone in that I don’t really feel Max as a character? Of course, Tom Pelphrey’s nominated again. He’s fantastic, but truth be told, I don’t enjoy him coming back to Guiding Light every other month. He should be making movies. Between the two of them, though, it shows that it pays to play a character who likes keeping their romantic interests in the family. (I’ll be here all week!)
I’m very happy for Rachel Melvin; I just wish Kristian Alfonso was nominated as well. I’m also secretly thrilled that Julie Berman wasn’t nominated. I know that’s mean and she’s probably really nice, but I feel that nominating her would cause Bob Guza and company to continue with the Lulu full throttle assault that’s been rocking my television between 3 and 4 pm daily for the last few months.
Judi Evans, who I’m pretty sure was on Days for like five episodes, last year also scored a nomination. How, I’m not sure. It’s not that she’s not good (because she is very good) its just that…well…what did she do? Came to town, bought a bar, moved to Dubai. Do you think that the nominating committee suffers from that same syndrome that the primetime committee does? You know, where they see a familiar name on the ballot and check it for old’s time sake? Or maybe everyone thinks it’s 1986.
Or perhaps the committee has a soft spot for guys on horses. Again, I love Thaao Penghlis, but he’s nominated for Lead Actor and I don’t remember when the last time he was actually on. (Because the show is actually called Days of Marleana and John’s Lives.) I hope for his clip they either show Andre riding a horse in the Dimera Mansion or Tony running around Sandals with his island girls. Bonus, if they show Marlena in her mixed denims again.
Here’s what I don’t understand: how does Allison Sweeney keep not getting nominated? I know she isn’t given the best material, but she’s arguably one of the faces of Daytime Television (at least for a certain age bracket) and she hosts The Biggest Loser. That puts her on par with Kelly Monaco at least. I just think that nominating her would actually be good for the soap industry and it might encourage some crossover. I’m not sure how many Dancing with the Stars fans became GH watchers but it couldn’t hurt. Maybe AS is just on too much, because if this year’s nominations have taught us anything, it’s that you only need one episode for every two weeks and it can’t hurt to be physically attracted to a family member.
Sigh, I would enjoy the Emmy nominations but Darrin Brooks nomination really irks me, mainly because I was holding out this ridiculous (ok unrealistic) hope that Blake would get nominated. What better way to tell TPTB how they are wasting his character? Now I’m afraid the Max propping is going to get worse. Max does nothing for me on this show.
I am thrilled for RM and JE. JE’s nomination oddly could have come from two characters, Bonnie and Adrienne. Remember Bonnie left last year and she did so in JE’s talented tearful confession that Mimi killed her father. That was a great performance. Her role as Adrienne has been rather low key but she had one really great scene with SN while Steve was in the asylum. I’m suprised at TP but he played duel roles again so I’m sure there is something to that.
