I haven’t decided if I am going to give this new 90210 reboot or not; I just feel like watching it will invalidate my youth. I mean, Kelly Taylor as a guidance counselor? Despite her protests to the contrary, I always imagined Kelly would end up like her coke-addled mother. Bonus points if she married and divorced Dylan.
Then there’s the issue of the “new kids”. Honestly, I just don’t know if I can deal with Eden from Nip/Tuck as anything else but a reject from the straigh-to-video Poison Ivy series and Lady Mossimo as the new millenium Cindy Walsh. Don’t even get me started on Lucille Bluth. I’d support her working at the Frozen Banana stand before this. I mean, the last “teen” show I got behind was The O.C.; a show I gave 3.4 years of my life to despite the steady decline in quality after the first seven episodes.
Admittedly, the PR Blitz strategy of trotting out the Original G’s is making me consider watching. Take for instance this Entertainment Weekly story wherein Shanne and Jennie dish on the series, their alleged rivalry and Tori Spelling. This is actually worth a read if you ignore the poor styling choices (why is Shannen not wearing a) high wasted jeans and/or b) a leather jacket) and bad posing (Jennie is doing some sort of bizarre hybrid of the “Larry King Lean” and that thing crooked detectives do on TV when they’re trying to coerce a confession out of you) because we learn that:
- Shannen is a huge Dancing with the Stars fan. She even voted for Ian and Jennie. I’m sorry, but the mental image of Shannen Doherty text messaging a vote for DWTS just kills me. Do you think she votes for America’s Choice on Big Brother as well? Now, while Shannen enjoys watching, she would never actually appear on the show. Why? Is it because she’s afraid she can’t dance? She totally can, by the way. Or is it because it’s really an overglorified popularity contest and she’s stil wary of the “I Hate Brenda” newsletter army? (By the way, I totally still have the “I Hate Brenda” book. I consider it a historial tome.)
- While Shannen has seen some excerpts, Jennie has not read STORITelling. Apparently, J asked T if she needed to read the book and Tori said no. I cry foul on this, because T and J are supposed to be “friends” (Tori includes a recent picture of the two in the book and even thanks Jennie) and if I wrote a book, I would expect each and every one of my friends to read it. Then again, I expect all my friends to read this blog and that doesn’t happen (although if I ever strike it rich and famous, don’t expect Michael Kors bags or anything non readers).
- Apparently the notorious Shannen/Jennie fistfight never happened. Jesus, does someone need to vet STORITelling like it’s a Stephen Glass article? Now I have my doubts about Terrence Trent D’arby phrophesizing at holiday parties. Also, if the crystal dolphin explosion didn’t really happen, I feel like my reading experience was ruined.
- Shannen doesn’t sell out her co-workers. Damn, how am I ever going to find out what went down between her and Millano on Charmed?
I don’t know; do I give this show a chance or not? I’m much more interested in reading “Now I can tell my truth: The Shannen Doherty” story in Us Weekly than the actual series.
I hate to say it, but I’ll be watching. I am too curious not to. I can’t say I’ll necessarily watch it weekly, but I probably will. I tend to get sucked into these shows and not give them up despite my better judgment. Then again, I did give up the original 90210 sometime during the college years. Not that I still didn’t see enough to know how it ended, hehe. We’ll see. I definitely wouldn’t turn in if Kelly and Brenda weren’t making appearances (and I heard a rumor that they’re still trying to get Luke Perry, and that he MIGHT be the father of Kelly’s kid). So, yeah, I’ll watch it. And you need to, so you can blog about it

I can’t decide either. On the one hand I do tend to get sucked into these things, on the other hand now that Rob Thomas isn’t involved I see all the ingredients for a train wreck. And not in a good way.
As for the inclusion of the characters from the old series, I think they need to be really careful about making sure that doesn’t over-shadow the new cast, because the thing will stand or fall on the new cast and I suspect they may open themselves up for a mighty fall if the balance isn’t right.
Plus, this whole thing serves to make me feel old. After all, I was in college when 90210 was on, so the arrival of a new generation is scary. At least with Gossip Girl I can delude myself I’m still young because I didn’t watch Rufus and Lily in a previous series when I was already an adult!

See when I watch Gossip Girl (and let’s be honest, it’s only been in passing) I think “why is Megan, Michael Mancini’s hooker with a heart of gold now playing a mom?”
And yes, I just set the show to record tomorrow night on my DVR.

Hee, I admit that seeing Megan on GG is a bit disconcerting but over time I’ve gotten over that and accepted her as Lily Vanderwoodson. What kind of name is that by the way? hehe I guess she’s Lily Bass now.
I’m glad you’re recording, I’m going to give it a shot tonight and see what’s what. I agree with Zara that they need to not overfeature the old cast while establishing the new. Hopefully the kids will be likable. I already like the guy playing the adopted twin, he was on The Wire and I thought he was just adorable (prior to him becoming a killer of course). We’ll see, looking forward to hearing what you have to say about it.

See, I’m even worse/older when it comes to GG because I had pretty much quit Melrose by the time Kelly Rutherford came on, but I’ve always loved her because I remember watching her when she was on Generations!
I will stop now before I walk myself into the grave.

“Didn’t I just say I would never comment on another cast member? Don’t ask me about the cast. Just don’t.”

Oh my God! I loved Generations! That’s why I loved KR on Melrose. I felt like she was making it to “the big time”.

“Unless that cast member is Holly Marie Combs. Because I got her on Charmed.”
